How I Learned to Stop Worrying About the End Times

Anonymous asked:

What do people mean by “the number of the beast” and 666? I’ve read Revelation 13:18, but this really doesn’t mean anything to me. May you clarify this please?

I answered:

Umm…no. No I cannot clarify that at all. According to Revelation 13, a beast will rise from the earth and in some way the number 666 will be associated with it. That’s about all I got.

Here is, to me, the most important verse in the Bible about the end times: Matthew 24:36 “But about that day or hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father.” What that says to me is: don’t spend too much energy thinking about the end times. You can’t predict them, you can’t stop them, and no amount of studying is going to change those two facts.

There is a lot of mystery and vagueness in the book of Revelation, which I guess is why people can get so caught up in it. It has all the action of a fantasy novel. The end times won’t have boring things like bills, and appointments, and returning emails. All the little nagging issues of faith don’t apply when you are running from beasts and demons.

To be perfectly honest, the end times don’t interest me all that much, because the present is pretty dang cool. There is plenty of spiritual warfare to go around right now.

Here is the main thing you need to know about the book of Revelation “He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death’ or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.” -Revelation 21:4. That is my take away from Revelation: It all works out, there is a happy ending. So all of the other stuff is coincidental to that, so it doesn’t seem to be anything to get too worked up about.
