God has a way for you to serve and ways for you to be growing in your faith right now, today. You do not have to sort yourself out or hit a certain level of holiness before that starts. There is this weird idea that if you don’t have everything in your life totally lined out, then you have no business serving the Lord. That is a thought straight from Hell to keep us forever on the sidelines.
“As Jesus was walking beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon called Peter and his brother Andrew. They were casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen. ‘Come, follow me,’ Jesus said, ‘and I will make you fishers of men.’ At once they left their nets and followed him.”
Jesus didn’t say “learn a ton of Bible, stop misbehaving in anyway, make yourselves fishers of men, and then come follow me.” Engaging with Jesus and serving is the way in which God grows us. It is a process, to be sure, but there is no reason to disqualify yourself from starting it today.
Nobody at the soup kitchen is going to shun you from helping because you struggle with pornography. The kids you are loving on and taking care of at church aren’t going to hold your anxiety against you. Jesus opens those doors for you to step into, and the more you serve and grow, the more those struggles will come to light and you will have fuel to deal with them.
God isn’t waiting for you to get yourself straightened out before He has a place for you, you shouldn’t be waiting for that either.
