What does it mean to speak in tongues?
What’s your take on speaking in tongues?
Speaking in tongues is in the Bible. In Acts Chapter 2, the Holy Spirit comes to the disciples at Pentecost and they speak in tongues. What that means in context is that they are immediately able to fluently speak a language they never learned. In 1 Corinthians chapter 12, Paul lists speaking in tongues as a spiritual gift. Nowhere in the Bible is speaking in tongues described as a secret, holy language.
The important thing to keep in mind about speaking in tongues is that it is not an indication of special status. It doesn’t mean someone has a supercharged dose of the Holy Spirit. Not speaking in tongues does not mean that you are encumbered by some sin you need to get rid of. This is seems to be the false assumption that a lot of people who focus on speaking in tongues are laboring under, but there is no biblical evidence for that.
The next question is: does speaking in tongues still happen today? I have never seen it, but I believe that it could. Now, call me a cynic, but I do believe that just because someone claims they spoke in tongues doesn’t mean in happened. This is a scenario for discernment, but also open mindedness.
