“The Lord is close to the brokenhearted
and saves those who are crushed in spirit.” -Psalm 34:18
You do not have to get your act together before you come before God. That is not how this Jesus thing works, yet that is one of the most pervasive lies we buy in to. There are so many aspects of life where, and people with whom, you have to put on a tough exterior, but that is not the case with God.
You know that God loves you and cares about you in your lowest moments. We are the ones uncomfortable with our own vulnerability, not God. Vulnerability is born of humility and honesty, which are both things that are necessary for growing in our relationship with God.
Jesus opens the Sermon on the Mount by saying “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” God is the one who mends broken hearts. Depression, anxiety, sadness, confusion are all things that we convince ourselves distance us from God, but that is not the truth. God is a healer and a renewer, and a broken heart is in a prime position for both.
God does not fear honesty or brokenness, He welcomes them. We should strive for the same in ourselves. Take your bruised and broken heart before the throne of God and He will turn it to something so beautiful you wouldn’t believe it.
